Whale washes
ashore @ 33rd Street

Workers from the Virginia Marine
Science Museum hover over an immature, approximately 30-foot
long, humpback whale that came ashore at 33rd Street Saturday
night, according to Alice Scanlon, VMSM public
affairs. A female, she said it may have died from injuries
received from a ship's propeller, judging from marks on its
back. VMSM personnel Sunday were taking lab samples from the
humpback, which attracted a sizeable crowd Sunday morning,
before disposing of it. Humpbacks grow up to 60-feet
long and weigh as much as 40 tons.
