Whale washes ashore @ 33rd Street

Workers from the Virginia Marine Science Museum hover over an immature, approximately 30-foot long, humpback whale that came ashore at 33rd Street Saturday night, according to Alice Scanlon, VMSM public affairs.  A female, she said it may have died from injuries received from a ship's propeller, judging from marks on its back.  VMSM personnel Sunday were taking lab samples from the humpback, which attracted a sizeable crowd Sunday morning, before disposing of it.  Humpbacks grow up to 60-feet long and weigh as much as 40 tons.
